2. Vectors vs. Bitmaps Flash's biggest advantage is its use of vector animation. Vector graphics describe images as lines and curves, while bitmaps describe images as a fixed grid of pixels. Other major Web image formats (JPEG, GIF) are bitmaps. Bitmaps are best used for photos and images with complex shading; vector graphics work best for cartoons, logos, and line art. Vector graphics have much smaller file sizes than bitmap images, and can be easily resized and manipulated without losing image quality. This means that a Flash animation can load in a fraction of the time it takes other video and animation formats to load. |
